Interview with Program Director Richard Denton: insights into The Fast Track Program for International Sport Management

Could you explain what makes this program different from other sport management study programs?

The Fast Track Program for International Sport Management (blended in Amsterdam) has been designed to accelerate career development for aspiring professionals in the sports industry, or those wishing to adapt their expertise to enter the sports industry in the near future.

  1. First, the length has been reduced to 5 months as opposed to 10 months, but we have retained the core modules you would expect to develop your knowledge and understanding of the latest trends in the industry.
  2. Second, due to a more compact program, it will be less about theory and more about real cases and application of learnings, plus the development of essential skills with a ‘can do’ mentality to advance in your chosen sport or sector.
  3. Finally, we have retained our blended approach of on campus sessions in Amsterdam and online sessions in combination with off-site visits in the Netherlands and the study trip to Barcelona, to create the optimal learning experience in a shorter timeframe.

Is there a specific profile this program has been designed for?

Yes, there are two specific groups we have designed this program for. The first is aimed at existing professionals in the sports industry who want to evolve their skill set and network. Ideally this will be professionals with 5 to 10 years of experience who are looking to advance to the next level.

The second group is aimed at professionals from sectors outside the sports industry. At Johan Cruyff Institute we have always believed professionals from other sectors can add value by applying their knowledge from important areas such as finance, IT, human resources, governance, corporate social responsibility, and even marketing and event management. For the sports industry to continue developing it needs people and expertise from different backgrounds and this is what we can offer through this program.

How will this program support my career development in the sports industry? And for what type of work?

As part of the application process, we will consider your profile and fit in terms of career development. Assuming there is a strong fit, we will support you with a personal development plan as part of our leadership in sport module. This also entails mentoring from our professors, meeting with professionals in the Johan Cruyff Institute network in lessons and at events, as well as the opportunity to engage with a wider network through assignments and off-site visits.

In terms of the work, this depends on the ambitions of the student, but we can provide guidance and networking opportunities across a range of corporations, agencies, federations and rights holders in the sports industry.
We can also advise students applying for positions in the industry and we organize a dedicated career development day to prepare students for their future employment opportunities.

Do the participants have the possibility to network within the sports industry?

Yes, as mentioned previously, the professors have an extensive network across the sports industry from international to national organizations, and importantly from commercial to foundations and more non-profit organizations providing valuable services to society.

Whilst many alumni of our programs are seeking opportunities in the commercial sector, there are also more opportunities in the non-commercial sectors as well, which we can cater for.

What are the main benefits from participating in this program?

There are many but I will list three of them.

  1. Firstly, quality of content. This program has been fine-tuned by Johan Cruyff Institute over 15 years educating hundreds of professionals making the next step in sport management delivered by professionals who work every day in their respective sectors across the industry.
  2. Secondly, we take a pragmatic approach which means learning, applying what you learnt, revising, and re-applying your skills and ideas to increase your knowledge and understanding of the industry. Self-reflection is also important to understand what you did that made a difference or what you could improve next time to continuously improve.
  3. Thirdly, and I believe this is something that deserves more mentoring and attention is to identify where you best opportunities exist in the sports industry. To move from ‘I would be happy to work anywhere in the industry’ to ‘I have a clear plan where I want to be in 3- or 5-years’ time and I know what I need to do to get there’.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the structure of The Fast Track Program for International Sport Management?

Yes, there are three tracks: The business of sport, leadership in sport and innovation in sport.
All these tracks will be covered on campus in Amsterdam and through off-site visits and the study trip to Barcelona.

In addition, students will also be able to choose from a range of online programs to complement their on-campus learning. For example, if you want to increase your esports, CSR, or digital marketing knowledge then you can add this through one of the many online programs, which allows more flexibility for your time management.

Each track contains multiple modules to ensure the program is fully integrated to deliver a more comprehensive understanding of the sports industry.
