Barcelona City Council is committed to continuing to provide resources and solutions to the challenges facing the city in the field of sport. With the mission of boosting the promotion of sport and physical activity in the city, and acting as an institutional link between the various stakeholders in the sports ecosystem, the council recently held the first meeting of the Consell Municipal de l’Esport (Municipal Sports Council).

The Consell Municipal de l’Esport de Barcelona is a sectoral participatory body that advises the municipal government on sporting matters, generates debate and knowledge about sport in the city, draws up proposals, formulates recommendations, conducts studies and issues opinions, while, while also participating in, evaluating and monitoring the city’s sporting plans and programs.

The group is made up of political representatives, associations, clubs, sports organizations, Catalan federations, companies that manage public, private and heritage facilities in Barcelona, organizations that work to promote sport among people with dissabilities, professional associations, representatives from the university field and people of value, either because of their past as former sportspeople or due to their links with different areas of sport management, as in the case of Mariël Koerhuis, general manager of Johan Cruyff Institute.

“Our participation in this think-tank will focus on promoting the development of professionals and the creation of qualified employment for the optimal management of sport in Barcelona” – Mariël Koeruis, general manager of Johan Cruyff Institute

At this first meeting, promoted and chaired by David Escudé, Barcelona City Council’s sports councillor, all the members of the Consell Municipal de l’Esport were introduced and the different challenges facing the city in order to continue to be a benchmark for the promotion of sport and physical activity were presented.

“It is an honor to be invited to be part of this group of experts. Our participation in this think-tank will focus on promoting the development of professionals and the creation of qualified employment for the optimal management of sport in Barcelona,” said Mariël Koerhuis.

The experts will be organized in working groups, will hold regular meetings and will participate in the debates at the Council’s sessions, being able to exercise their right to vote on aspects submitted for the Council’s approval that could not be approved by consensus.
