Johan Cruyff Institute receives recognition in the Education category from the Fundació Catalana per a l’Esport for its scholarship fund The Cruyff Athlete Fund
Johan Cruyff Institute has been awarded by the Fundació Catalana per a l’Esport for its initiative ‘The Cruyff Athlete Fund’, the scholarship fund aimed at professional and semi-professional athletes about to retire, or already retired, who need help to make the transition to management positions in the sports industry. Johan Cruyff Institute has been awarded in the category of ‘Education and Sport’ in the fourth edition of ‘Guardons de l’Esport’, an initiative that recognizes those people, entities and projects that work, through sport, to positively transform the social reality in their immediate environment.
At an event that was held on October 29th in virtual format and was broadcast in streamed live, the general manager of Johan Cruyff Institute, Mariël Koerhuis, received the award on behalf of our institution. “We are very grateful for this recognition of the work that our founder Johan Cruyff started 20 years ago and that the whole Johan Cruyff Institute team continues to do in Barcelona and Amsterdam because, as he expressed it well, ‘Who better to manage the sports industry than those who have the heart of an athlete’. And this is what we do: we train leaders in sport management to benefit the professionalization of the sports industry,” said Mariël.
The Cruyff Athlete Fund is one of the most important pillars of Johan Cruyff Institute’s CSR program. Johan was convinced that, with the right academic background, athletes are the best people to lead and professionalize the sports industry. In the first two editions, a total of 14 athletes have benefited from full scholarships to study postgraduate and master’s programs in sport management, sport marketing and sponsorship, and football business.
