UAB, best Spanish university in the QS WUR 2023 ranking

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), with which we jointly deliver the Official Master’s Degree in Sport Management, is ranked as the best Spanish university and 178th in the world in the latest QS WUR 2023 ranking

The UAB, with which we jointly deliver the Official Master’s Degree in Sport Management in both on-campus and online modalities, continues to reaffirm, year after year, its place among the most prestigious universities in the world. The results of the QS WUR 2023 ranking place it in 178th position worldwide—an improvement of 31 positions compared to the previous edition—and the best Spanish university. The data also show that, although the UAB’s position has varied over time, the percentile in which it is placed is improving year after year. The UAB is currently in the top 12.5% of the best universities in the world, whereas in 2004 it was in the top 20.5% despite occupying 173rd position in the ranking, due to the increase in the number of universities evaluated.

The Official Master’s Degree in Sport Management has been taught since 2016 and is the result of the collaboration agreement that Johan Cruyff Institute signed with the Faculty of Economics and Business of the UAB, with the aim of joining forces and promoting university education in one of the professional sectors with the highest economic growth.

“The master’s degree not only offers a global vision of sport management, with a theoretical and applied vision of the reality in the sector, but it is also accredited by the Catalan University Quality Agency (AQU) as a program recognized for its quality. This mention is recognized throughout the European Union, making our master’s degree one of the programs with the highest academic quality in Europe,” says Ricard Esparza, academic coordinator of the program at the UAB.

In terms of the overall score in the ranking, this year the UAB obtained 45.8 points out of 100 (42.6 in the previous edition) with a significant improvement in some of the criteria used. In the criterion of standardized citations per academic, the UAB went from 90.3 citations per academic to 139, an improvement of more than 14 points (from 52.7 to 66.9). QS assigns the UAB a total of 26,092 articles (2016-2020 period) and more than 419,000 citations (295,001 after excluding self-citations and normalization by research area).

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has improved 31 positions in the rankings compared to last year edition.

The UAB continues to show improvement in terms of internationalization criteria and enjoys a very good academic reputation among academics from other universities, for which it obtained 62.2 points. This fact is fundamental to explain the UAB’s position in the global ranking, as the indicator represents 40% of the total score.

The results are a recognition of the efforts made by the UAB in research, which this year is endorsed by a new indicator (not yet included in the ranking) that values the international research network and places the UAB in 91st place in the world.

To compile the ranking, which classifies the 500 best universities worldwide, QS asks universities directly for data from the last completed academic year (2021-2022) and obtains the number of citations for the last six years from Elsevier’s SCOPUS scientific database.
