Eight professional international athletes will be able to obtain academic training in sport management through the scholarship fund The Cruyff Athlete Fund for the 2021-22 academic year

The Cruyff Athlete Fund, the Johan Cruyff Institute scholarship fund aimed at facilitating the transition of professional athletes to the world of management through academic training, incorporates in its third edition eight new international athletes for the academic year 2021-22.

There are two huge moments in the life of every athlete: the day they decide to bet everything on their sports career and the day, after so many years of dedication and sacrifice, it comes to an end. Johan Cruyff Institute is at the end of that path to facilitate their transition to the world of work and help them to remain linked to the sports industry from the management side of things. Academic training is essential to achieve this purpose and it is for this reason that the Institute makes this scholarship fund available to athletes as a fundamental pillar of its CSR and as part of the academic legacy of Johan Cruyff.

In the 2021-22 academic year, Johan Cruyff Institute will welcome the following athletes to its virtual classrooms to study the Master in Sport Management Online, the Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Marketing Online and the Postgraduate Diploma in Football Business Online:


Germán ChiaraviglioGermán Chiaraviglio (34 years old, Argentina): Qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the pole vault discipline and current member of the CADA (Argentine Athletics Confederation) athletes commission. To this day, he is the only Argentine athlete to win a gold medal in a World Championship. He participated in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and was a finalist in Rio 2016. Winner of the Konex Platinum Award in 2010, which distinguished him as the best Argentine athlete of the decade, silver medallist in the 2015 Pan American Games with a new Argentine record, Olimpia de Plata (2016) and South American indoor champion in Bolivia (2020). Awarded a scholarship for the Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Marketing Online.


Daniela GiménezDaniela Giménez (29 years old, Argentina): Competes in adapted swimming in 50m free, 100m butterfly and 100m fathom. Participated in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games and in the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games (bronze in 100m butterfly) and Guadalajara 2011 (gold in 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, and bronze in 100m butterfly). Awarded a sholarship to study the Master in Sport Management Online.


Romina LamasRomina Lamas (42 years old, Argentina): Former professional volleyball player with 106 international appearances with the Argentine team and 10 appearances with the Spanish team, given her dual nationality. During her career, she played for clubs in Argentina, Italy, Spain, France and Azerbaijan, retiring in 2018 as a player for Arona Tenerife Sur (Spain). In her trophy haul, she has 1 Champions League, 8 European Cups, 6 Spanish Championships, 8 Spanish Cups and 4 Spanish Super Cups. She is currently a coach at the Tenerife-San Miguel de Abona Volleyball Academy. Awarded a scholarship to study the Master in Sport Management Online.


Inés RemersaroInés Remersaro (29 years old, Uruguay): International swimmer specialized in 100m and 200m backstroke. She participated in the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio (where she broke the national record of the 100m freestyle). She is currently a delegate of the Athletes Commission of the Uruguayan Olympic Committee. Awarded a scholarship to study the Master in Sport Management Online.


Brenda Alejandrina SalmerónBrenda Alejandrina Salmerón (30 years old, El Salvador): International athlete in middle distance, distance and 3000m obstacles, with multiple Central American and Codicader championship titles and holder of national records in the under-16, under-18 and under-20 categories. She is still active and eligible for the El Salvador national team and works at the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES) in marketing and business administration. Awarded a scholarship to study the Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Marketing Online.


Alejandro MuscatAlejandro Muscat (36 years old, Spain): Member of the pre-Olympic team of the Spanish Sailing Federation, in Finn Class. A member of PROAD, the Spanish High Council for Sports (CSD) program to support top-level athletes. A graduate in Business Administration and Management. Awarded a scholarship to study the Master in Sport Management Online.


Onyekachi AkakemOnyekachi Akakem (31 years, Nigeria): Eleven years as a professional football player in Nigeria and at other African clubs. Winner of the CFA in 2012 and 2016 and participant in the 2015 and 2017 editions. He is currently technical director of FC Columbus (Nigeria), of the National Soccer League. Awarded a scholarship for the Postgraduate in Football Business Online.


Mohammad MohasinMohammad Mohasin (34, Bangladesh): Captain of the national wheelchair cricket team. Founder of the Wheelchair Cricket Welfare Association Bangladesh and general secretary of the International Wheelchair Cricket Council, the world regulating body for the sport. Awarded a scholarship to study the Master in Sport Management Online.


New call for applications, underway

The application campaign for the fourth edition of The Cruyff Athlete Fund will open on September 6, 2021 and will end at 7:00 p.m. (Spanish time) on May 19, 2022. Candidates will be eligible for all online postgraduate and master’s programs in sport management, sport marketing and sponsorship, and football business of the September-October edition of the 2022-2023 academic year. The 2022-2023 scholarship winners will be announced on June 15, 2022.
